Four things Labour does to win
Labour wins when we do four things:
1. We offer Labour supporters something to make their lives better - and want to make their lives better
We're not a party that should treat our supporters as something to be managed while getting on with other things.
2. We offer non-Labour Party supporters something to make their lives better - and want to make their lives better
Treating the winning over of Conservative voters as a regrettable necessity gets us nowhere. We need to want to represent a greater number of people than we currently do.
3. We build a critique of the Tories that all parts of the country can recognise
We’re pretty good at talking about the damage the Tories do to the poorest in society. Rightly, we expose them on the bedroom tax, zero hours contracts, the damage they do to the NHS and on countless other fronts.
We need to be as good at highlighting where they're hurting people who own their own home or are doing ok but are still struggling.
4. Deal with the reasons people don’t like us
People don't trust us with the economy, don't trust us on social security and don't trust us on immigration.
Winning back that trust in a way that chimes with Labour values will be the one of the hardest things we have to do this side of government.
