Voters thought we were similar to the Tories? Nope.
(but that doesn’t mean we should be)
There are so many theories on why we lost the General Election. One is incredibly popular - but completely wrong:
That people didn’t vote for us because we were too similar to the Tories.
How do we know it’s wrong? Because when you ask voters why they didn’t vote Labour, they don’t mention it. And even when voters are asked if they thought Labour and Tories were similar, they say we weren’t.
67% to 21%, the public believed that Labour and the Tories were different rather than similar from each other on spending
62% to 26% on the economy, 62% to 25% on the type of people we represent, 58% to 29% on our visions for the country.
If we want to end George Osborne's austerity policies and put Labour values back in government, we need to reach out to the public.
And do that, we need to really understand what the public currently think of us.
